‘Bad Side of a Wicked Moon’ by Caleb Pirtle

My Review (5 stars out of 5)

Finding oil in East Texas brings strangers into the town of Ashland, and Eudora Durant and her new lover Doc know very well that strangers sometimes mean trouble. When a hearse turns up in the town one morning, it drops off an unexpected cargo. Meanwhile, the local sheriff has disappeared leaving his car abandoned. After the hearse driver turns up dead, Doc and Eudora find themselves accused of murder, but they aren’t the only ones under suspicion and the town’s newspaperman soon lands himself in jail. Can Doc and Eudora find out what’s going on before someone else ends up dead?

This is book #2 in the Boomtown Saga and is every bit as good as the first one. The author’s writing style is still of the ‘slow-burner’ variety as he weaves his story together, laying out suspects and possible motives along with plenty of surprises. There’s also a nice layer of humour underlying the story and the descriptions of the landscape make it easy to picture every scene as if we were watching a movie.

An enjoyable read with lots of twists and turns.
